Autoplay next video in lessons
complete
Siif Floor
Hi :)
We often have multiple videoes or audiofiles in the same lesson (in courses).
This is because it makes it easier for our participants select how much of the course they want to watch at the same time and to find and rewatch a specific parts of the course.
Our experience is that in most cases there are more benefits in having small videos of 20-40 minutes than one long video thas is 2-4 hours long.
But we also have participants that likes to listen to the video/audiofiles when driving or doing the dishes. In this case it would be awesome if there was a button on the lesson to let the participant choose if they want to autoplay the next video (all our videos are added as additional content in the lesson).
With such a button those that want to watch it all at once don't have to stop what they are doing, scroll to the next video, press the button to play the next video.
Instead theu would just hit play on the first video, and when it is over the page would jump to the next video and start it automatically (same for audiofiles).
This would be an awesome feature.
Teachable has a feature like this (see attached image)
Thanks in advance
Siif
PS. this is an old feature request from the former feature request forum. But because we keep getting asked about this from our participants I am reposting here :)

This would be amazing. At the moment the feedback I received from someone who trialled my course is that from an end user perspective, she had to click twice: (1) Mark Completed (2) Go to next video. She said that clicking only once (so after "mark complete" for it to go to the next video) or if it autoplayed when complete, it would make her more likely to finish the course. Thanks for looking into this!
Merete Stenner
Karishma Motiram clicking Mark complete should take the user directly to the next lesson already, but she would still have to click play.

Yes! My course members also miss this possibility and I have requested this feature, as well. Thank you Siif for describing it so good. It looks like Lis is on the case. Maybe it's not too long before something happens! :)

Lis Alvarez Yay!
Lis, just fo clarification :)
We have multiple videoes added as additional files in the same lesson. I am not sure this if this is how most people add their videos.
But would be great if the auto-play feature are able to handle aditional files - and not only "one video per lesson" :) :)
You are welcome to take a look at one of our lessons here: https://egosjael.trueliving.dk/courses/66208-egoet-modul-1-4/lessons/976574-se-optagelser-modul-1

Siif Floor the implementation for now is designed to be for main videos only.
In fact, videos attached as additional content will no longer be embedded in the long term, and shown on the side bar instead as additional resources.
Is there a reason these videos added as additional content would not be split in separate lessons instead?
(just trying to get more context on your current setup so we can improve the root design)

Ohhh that would not be a good fit for us 😢
Thank you so much for mentioning this and asking for more context 🙏
We have created our course with multiple videos in the same lessons to give our participants a better overview of the course, and to make sure that they do not have to spend a lot of time clicking back and forth to find what they are looking for.
If you are to remove the embedded feature we would really have to go trough hoops to create a workaround for - right now I can't really imagine how it woul be pissible for us to use the courses if the embedding of additional files are removed
I hope you will take into consideration to keep the possibility of having multiple videos in the same lesson.
Ps. I'll be sending over screencast of our setup for you to get a bit more context. Thank you very much for taking the time to look into this 💞

Lis Alvarez oh no that is really bad news about additional content, why break something that works? There have gone a lot of careful planning into putting specific videos into the exact lessons they're in and in some cases it's best to embed them, in others, they're there to be folded out, but in any case let your users decide. Not being able to have more than one media file in a lesson was a big pain point when the courses was first released, the current flexibility was something highly demanded, why break that?
Lis Alvarez
Hi Merete Stenner, would you say more about why in some cases embedding multiple videos on the same lesson works better than having one lesson per video? We'd love to have more context so we can make the new design work in those cases.
Merete Stenner
Lis Alvarez certainly :) For instance, I'm currently working with a Simplero user who provides programs for physical training. In some of her courses, the lessons consists of 3 videos, where the first is the minimum requirement, but then if the clients have the time and energy, they can do one or two extra as well. By having all 3 videos in the same lesson, you can still mark the lesson completed even though you only did the required 1 video, if those were split into 3 lessons (as they are in some other of her programs, where the intention is to do all 3), you are left with gaps between your checkmarks, which makes you feel like you didn't do the job good enough, even though you actually did just that by showing up and doing the first video each day. So that's the motivational side of things. Another issue is, that each time you go to a new lesson, you have to reconnect your chromecast, where in the same lesson, you can just hit play on the next video.
There's also a lot of cases where two videos in a lesson is closely connected and thus mostly makes sense to keep them together, like if you have a general introduction video, then some text and then below maybe two videos, with two different focuses (like instruction for setting something up on software A and software B), where most clients will only need to watch one of the additional videos.
I'm also wondering how the experience will be on mobile, since you don't have the right hand side menu there, so the extra content will have to be below the main content anyways, why then make it different on desktop.
Also what's the plan with pdf's?
Lis Alvarez
Thanks Merete Stenner, ideally you would be able to play the next lesson without having to reconnect chromecast.
Anyhow, I'll share your use case with the team.
The new lesson UI supports embedded PDF when it's the main asset of the lesson. Additional PDFs currently show on a modal when you click on them.
Merete Stenner
Lis Alvarez thanks for bringing it on. This then brought a new issue to my attention, PDF's are almost never the main asset on a lesson (even if the current interface supported that in a good way, it would not be used a lot), the most common case I have seen (and I've seen a lot) is, that the pdf is something that supports a video or audio file, like slides or a textbook that goes with the video/audio content. So it's super important for usability to have the option to have both elements visible on the same page, not in the next lesson and not as some additional hidden stuff. I really feel the development is going backwards not forward here, just took a look at some of my own lessons in the new look and it's basically a disaster, you're (the team, not you personally) literally pouring hundreds and hundreds of you clients carefully spent hours down the drain.
That embedded (in the lesson!!) pdf feature on the old layout is killer, it works SO well, and it's fantastic to be able to stop and start the video and the peruse the relevant part of the adjoining pdf. That will not be possible anymore.
What is the inspiration for these new designs? Which and how many of your current long time loyal users have you asked about how they use their courses, what they're lacking, and what is really working well? Where's the pedagogical evidence supporting the new structure, because clearly there must be some logic behind, that I just haven't realized yet? I'm afraid the strong focus on building community features is taking the educational design side of things hostage in this proces.

I can see that this feature request has been marked as solved now.
So I have created a feature request for the additional content:

Siif Floor I was just going to suggest this feature, and you've done a great job of it! Thank you. Calvin Correli, having autoplay (or a playlist) would make it even better for anyone else still using Youtube embeds to finally switch to Simplero 😄
Siif Floor
George Kao: Yay! Glad that my request if helpful 😍
